Kendall Baker, “The Sports Newsletter Guy,” knows a thing or two about building a successful daily newsletter. He started the “Sports Internet” newsletter, which has since been acquired by Axios.
Baker’s interview with
shared the two strategies he used to build and grow a successful daily sports newsletter.1. Let Your Personality Shine.
With the rise in newsletter popularity in the last few years, it’s critical to stand out in your niche.
Baker advised pairing your personality along with your newsletter. By doing this, you can stand out from the crowd and build a community of people who care about your content because they enjoy your personality.
The rise of AI-generated content makes the importance of your personality even more important in your newsletter. If your newsletter sounds like a robot could write it - people probably aren’t going to read it.
2. Make it Short.
TikTok and YouTube Shorts have created an expectation for short, punchy content. Shorter attention spans mean readers are much more likely to get bored and “jump ship” if your newsletter drones on.
Baker said he intentionally keeps his daily newsletter as short as possible - cutting out as many words as he can.
Keeping your daily newsletter short values people’s time.
